Discover the Power of Low-Dose Radiation Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Low-dose radiotherapy uses very small, carefully controlled doses of radiation to help with painful osteoarthritis. It works as an anti-inflammatory treatment. It is different from the stronger radiotherapy used for cancer because it uses a much lower dose of radiation and is therefore very unlikely to cause side effects.

When to Consider Low-Dose Radiotherapy Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Where Does Radiotherapy Fit In?

There are several ways to manage osteoarthritis, depending on the severity and specific joints affected:

1

Activity Modification

Adjusting how you perform daily tasks can help relieve stress on painful joints

2

Immobilisation & Bracing

Restricting joint movement with braces or splints can help reduce pain and inflammation

3

Exercises & Stretching

Gentle exercises and stretches can improve joint flexibility and strengthen supporting muscles

4

Medication & Injections

Your doctor may prescribe medicine or injections to alleviate pain and control inflammation

5

Radiotherapy

This treatment uses gentle non-invasive X-rays to relieve pain and inflammation

6

Surgery

In severe cases, surgical options like joint fusion or replacement can restore function

Is Low-Dose Radiotherapy Safe?

Low-dose radiotherapy is considered a very safe and effective treatment option for managing osteoarthritis. This safety comes from several key factors:

What to Expect From The Join Pain Practice

During The Consultation

  1. Your consultant will ask questions, examine you, and discuss treatment options with you, including the benefits and possible side effects
  2. If it’s agreed that radiotherapy is right for your condition, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form for your treatment
  3. Your consultant will then book you in for a CT scan, which allows them to aim the radiotherapy exactly towards the painful areas

During Your Radiotherapy Treatment

  1. You’ll be asked to lie down on a couch in a comfortable position underneath the radiotherapy machine
  2. The treatment is completely painless and does not cause drowsiness, dizziness, burning, or pain
  3. Each appointment takes around 10 minutes, with the radiotherapy treatment itself taking about a minute or two to complete
The radiotherapy is given on alternate weekdays (e.g., Monday/Wednesday/Friday) for two weeks. Often, the six treatments are repeated after a three-month break.

After Your Radiotherapy Treatment

Three months after your treatment, you’ll see your consultant so that they can assess how your pain is. Most people will need a second course of six treatments, but if the pain has completely disappeared, then you may be able to miss it out.
